The Food Department is a new food hall in Magna Plaza Amsterdam, near the Dam Square. Amsterdam has seen a massive evolution / revolution in the food scene over the years. The first food halls in Amsterdam, De Foodhallen and The World Of Food were the original food halls in Amsterdam. Here is a link to the top 10 foods you should try in Amsterdam.
Food hall trends in Amsterdam have continuing with the introduction of a new food hall, the Food Department Magna Plaza. The Magna Plaza Food hall is a great place to discover Amsterdam street food. Therefore, if you’re wondering what to eat in Amsterdam, this is the place for you.
There are 16 food stalls serving a large variety of street / finger food, including the Butcher hamburgers, sushi, greek street food, Chinese Food.
Whenever I travel I always make a point of finding food halls. I’m attracted to the variety on offer, but even more than the variety of the food is the people who run the various stalls. Often, stall owners are expats from the countries of the food they sell. By visiting food halls you are able to “travel” to many countries through the food and the people serving the food. I like chatting to stall owners, enquiring where they are from, in case it’s not obvious from their food. I enjoy hearing their stories about why they started their food stalls. Try it next time you visit a food stall and let me know how it goes.
I also enjoy visiting food halls for the variety. There were two dishes that really appealed to me during my visit to the Magna Plaza food hall. First was the fried artichoke from the Greek food stall and the other was goat on a stick. The final reason I enjoy food halls is that portion sizes tend to be on the smaller side, which makes me more adventurous. The risk of getting it wrong is lower.
